Leo was a good buddy. We had fun times together despite hard times in school.

Leo and I were neighbors, and often walked to school together( back when kids actually had to walk to school), to Elizabeth Street, and later to Baker High. Leo didn't have an easy upbringing, but I can't recall him ever bemoaning his situation. He always worked hard, rarely complained, and was always ready and willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it.

As an adult, most of the occasions where Leo and I crossed paths were at flea markets and such, where Leo was frequently a vendor. It might have been four or five years between meetings, but he always made it seem like it was only yesterday. He still had the same friendly greeting and firm handshake I remembered from our youth.  I saw him just a few weeks before he passed away, and was shocked when the news came. Sometimes we don't fully appreciate the value of a friend until it's too late. I think of Leo as one of the real "good guys."
