Paul remained the happy-go-lucky soul he was in high school throughout his life, in spite of the illness that afflicted him in his later years. I had nicknamed him "Shotgun" back in eighth grade, after he beat me in skeet shooting at the State Conservation Camp in Raquette Lake, and he still answered to it whenever we met. He was something of a fixture at the B'ville Diner, which is where I saw him the most before his passing in 2004. Paul rose to the rank of Seargent in the Marine Corps, where he saw duty in the Viet Nam war. Unlike so many who spent time "In Country," he never seemed to be embittered by the experience. In spite of the passing years and obvious changes in our outward appearances, he always came off as the same likeable guy he was as a kid. Confined to a wheelchair in his latter years, he was a familiar sight on the streets of town, not just to the people of Baldwinsville, but especially to the canine population, many of whom would wag their tails in anticpation as they saw him coming, for he was always carrying a variety of treats in the saddlebags he'd affixed to his chair for just that purpose.

Some say you can judge a person's character by the way they treat animals. If that's true, Paul was certainly a very special human being (but I already knew that). Semper Fi, and rest in peace, Paul.
